The far-reaching effects of the Coronavirus present challenges to all of us in the Santa Clarita Valley. As a Santa Clarita Valley attorney and long time member of the community, let me provide some tips on how to deal with some issues resulting from the virus. The Stimulus Package just passed by the Senate will increase unemployment/employment benefits to those who have lost their jobs, or have been laid-off or furloughed. The bill now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
If you have been laid off or lost your job, you are eligible for unemployment benefits. Please apply for benefits as early as possible because of the unprecedented demands being made on the system. Please remember that the anti-discrimination laws remain unaffected by the present crisis. Also, if you qualify, please apply to the SBA for their new loan program.
If you are a landlord or tenant, you are facing the same problem but from different sides: the payment of rent. See if you can arrange for rent to be reduced during this time. You can spread the shortage over the life of the lease or reach another arrangement. Both parties benefit from cooperating with each other. Remember, we are all in this together and with each other’s help we will get through this.
Existing contracts may also be affected by the virus. Performance under a contract may be excused because of the virus. Each circumstance is different. Please contact my Santa Clarita Business, Employment and Real Estate firm if we can answer any questions or help you. Please stay safe and healthy. Please observe the restrictions issued by the governmental authorities.
